The origin of the word “poke” are unknown, but the word is thought to have been coined by card hustlers. During the American frontier, a player indicating themselves as the dealer would carry a knife with a buckthorn handle. If they did not want to deal, they would pass the buck to the next player. Nowadays, the phrase is used to denote passing responsibility to another player. In 1973, the World Series of Poker was shown on television. This pushed poker’s popularity.

The number of players can vary from four to twelve. Ideally, the game has six to eight players. The pot is the sum of all bets placed by all players in a single deal. The highest-ranking hand wins the pot. Another way to win the pot is to place a bet that no other player calls. However, the betting phase of poker is similar to laying a foundation for a house. You must have a strong hand to win.
