Each player places an initial contribution to the pot, called the ante, of one or more chips before the cards are dealt. Then, each player must either call the bet of any player to his or her left by putting into the pot at least as many chips as that player; raise that bet by putting in more than that amount; or drop (fold).
When no one raises during a betting round, players reveal their hands and the winner is determined. Depending on the variant of Poker being played, there may be one main pot or several side pots.
Bluffing is an important strategy in Poker. In order to win you must be able to read the other players at the table and predict their behavior. This includes recognizing conservative players who fold early and aggressive players who bet high on the first few rounds before seeing how their cards do.
A complete hand consists of five cards. The highest hand wins the entire pot of money that has been put into play. A full house consists of three cards of the same rank and two matching cards of another rank. A flush consists of 5 cards that skip around in rank but are all from the same suit. And a pair consists of two cards of the same rank.
